The Supper at Emmaus Dinner

This autumn, Locatelli at the National Gallery invites you to experience something truly extraordinary. On Thursday 17th October, Giorgio Locatelli and his team will host Supper at Emmaus — a unique dining event inspired by the genius of Michelangelo Merisi da Caravaggio, one of the most celebrated painters of the Italian Baroque.

Blending fine art and gastronomy, the evening will honour Caravaggio’s iconic work The Supper at Emmaus, which hangs in the National Gallery just steps from the restaurant. Guests will enjoy a four-course tasting menu with wine pairings, each dish designed to capture the drama, symbolism, and flavours of Caravaggio’s world. Book your place now.

Caravaggio: Inspiration in Light and Shadow

Caravaggio’s art is known for its bold contrasts of light and darkness — the chiaroscuro style that revolutionised painting. His works combine realism with raw emotion, drawing the viewer into the very heart of the scene.

The Supper at Emmaus (1601) captures the biblical moment when two disciples recognise the resurrected Christ during a meal. Everyday objects — bread, wine, fruit — become symbols of transformation, revelation, and divine presence. This powerful mix of the ordinary and the sacred is exactly what inspired Giorgio Locatelli to create an event where art steps off the canvas and onto the plate.

The Evening’s Programme

6:30pm – Arrival & Welcome
Guests will be greeted with a glass of Marchese Antinori Franciacorta Cuvee Royale NV before being guided into the world of Caravaggio.

7:00pm – Talk with the Art Historian
An art historian from the National Gallery will provide exclusive insight into The Supper at Emmaus. Their talk will uncover the symbolism hidden within the fruit basket, bread, and wine, and explain how Caravaggio’s use of light transforms an ordinary supper into a profound revelation.

7:30pm – Four-Course Tasting Menu
Guests will sit down to a four-course dinner crafted by Giorgio Locatelli and his team. Each dish has been inspired by Caravaggio’s painting, designed to balance Italian culinary tradition with the visual drama of chiaroscuro.
